How the electromagnetic waves between Earth and ionosphere may relate to our biological rhythms – and what NASA research explores about the "heartbeat of the Earth."
What Is the Schumann Resonance?
The space between the Earth's surface and the ionosphere behaves like an electromagnetic cavity resonator. Lightning discharges – approximately 100 per second worldwide – continuously pump it with energy. The result: standing electromagnetic waves at 7.83 Hz (fundamental frequency) and overtones at 14.3 Hz, 20.8 Hz, 27.3 Hz. Discovered and calculated by Winfried Otto Schumann (1952).
This resonance is so stable that it serves as a global reference point. Strong solar storms measurably shift it – which researchers describe as a natural "electromagnetic pulse of the Earth."
The Biological Connection to the Brain
The human brain generates waves between 7–8 Hz at the Alpha/Theta transition (relaxation, falling asleep) – nearly exactly the Schumann frequency. According to several researchers, this correspondence is not coincidental: Our nervous system evolved over millions of years within this electromagnetic field.
The HeartMath Institute (McCraty et al.) published data showing a statistical correlation between Schumann Resonance fluctuations and human Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – a marker for autonomic nervous system health. Causality is not established, but the finding is reproducible.
The Problem of the Modern World: Electrosmog
Modern buildings with concrete and steel reinforcement significantly dampen natural electromagnetic fields. Artificial EMF sources (WiFi, cellular, power lines) overlay the weak Schumann Resonance. Whether this shielding has measurable biological effects is scientifically debated – but plausible if one takes the evolutionary adaptation hypothesis seriously.
The NASA Solution for Astronauts
Early astronauts returned from long-duration missions with sleep disturbances, mood swings, and diminished cellular vitality. In response, NASA engineers integrated Schumann frequency generators into space stations. Dr. Thomas Goodwin patented a magnetic field generator specifically for this purpose in 2009 (US Patent 7627408).
The argument: What is absent in space and causes problems must be biologically relevant on Earth. Consumer devices that generate 7.83 Hz as a PEMF-like field now exist – with growing but not yet fully established evidence for therapeutic benefit.
