Why the placebo effect is not mere imagination but is associated with measurable neurological responses in the body – and why frequencies may serve as effective anchors for the nervous system.
The Dismissal of the Word "Placebo"
"It's just placebo" is one of the most common dismissals in discussions about complementary medicine. This dismissal ignores the biology: Placebo effects are real, measurable, and neurobiologically well understood.
Fabrizio Benedetti (University of Turin), one of the leading placebo researchers, demonstrated: Placebo injections demonstrably activate endogenous opioid systems – blockable by naloxone (opioid antagonist). This is not "imagining things" – this is pharmacology triggered by expectation.
Endogenous Opioids: Painkillers in the Brain
When a patient receives a placebo painkiller and expects relief, the brain releases endogenous opioids (endorphins, enkephalins). In pain studies, placebo achieves effect sizes of d = 0.5–0.8 – comparable to medium-potency analgesics.
The same applies to expectation effects on the immune system: Conditioning experiments (Ader & Cohen, 1975) showed that the immune system can be classically conditioned – placebo can trigger measurable immune responses.
This means: Even if a frequency had no direct biological effect, the expectation while listening could produce real physiological changes. This is not an argument against frequency therapy – but for conscious use of the mind-body connection.
Symbiosis of Sound and Intention
Auditory stimulation is particularly effective as an "anchor" for the nervous system: Sound directly activates the limbic system, bypasses the rational filter of the prefrontal cortex, and reliably induces physiological relaxation responses.
Frequencies may combine two mechanisms of action: the direct neurophysiological effect on the nervous system (via the auditory system) and the expectation-based activation of endogenous regulatory processes. This potential synergy is what makes frequency-based approaches an interesting area of research. Frequency Healings recommends: Come with an open but not uncritical mind.
