Binaural Beats
Acoustic illusion in the brain: When both ears hear slightly different tones, a difference frequency is created internally (e.g., 10 Hz = Alpha). Requires stereo headphones.
Brainwave Entrainment
The tendency of the brain to synchronize its wave activity with an external rhythm. Measurable on EEG as Frequency Following Response (FFR).
EEG (Electroencephalogram)
Measurement of electrical brain activity via electrodes on the scalp. Gold standard for detecting brainwave entrainment effects.
Frequency Following Response (FFR)
Brain response to rhythmic stimulation: Neural activity synchronizes with the stimulus frequency. Basis for Binaural Beats and Isochronic Tones.
HRV (Heart Rate Variability)
Fluctuations between heartbeats in milliseconds. High HRV = healthy autonomic nervous system. Clinical marker for stress reduction and vagal tone.
Isochronic Tones
Regularly pulsed single tones (e.g., 40 clicks/sec = 40 Hz). Work via ASSR mechanism, no headphones required.
Microglia
Immune cells of the brain. Phagocytize cell debris and amyloid-beta plaques. Activated by 40 Hz gamma entrainment (MIT GENUS research).
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)
Pulsed electromagnetic field. FDA-approved since 1979 for fracture healing. Induces weak currents in biological tissue.
Piezoelectricity
Electrical charge created by mechanical deformation. Collagen in bones is piezoelectric – basis for PEMF therapy and bone healing.
Placebo Effect
Measurable physiological effect through expectation (endogenous opioids, dopamine). Not ineffective – but isolated through control groups in serious research.
Schumann Resonance
Electromagnetic resonance between Earth's surface and ionosphere at 7.83 Hz. Natural field in which the human nervous system evolved.
Solfeggio Frequencies
Frequency series (174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852, 963 Hz) with modern wellness claims. Historical origin not verifiable; individual frequencies (528 Hz) have real study data.
TTFields (Tumor Treating Fields)
High-frequency alternating electric fields (100–300 kHz). FDA-approved for glioblastoma (2011). Prevent cancer cells from dividing.
Vagus Nerve
Cranial nerve X: connects brainstem with heart, lungs and gut. 80% of its fibers are afferent (body→brain). Deep tones directly stimulate its ear branch.
